Elementary School

Normal Park strives to infuse "rich academic vocabulary" in all content areas where,
"students are encouraged to incorporate academic vocabulary into their dialogue each day. Helping students to use academic vocabulary frequently and correctly will prepare them for higher learning and increase their professional opportunities." (normalpark.com)

This weed and feed proposes to meet that need and to embody the Common Core and AASL standards as listed below:

Kindergarten:

CC.K.R.L.1 Key Ideas and Details: With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
AASL 1.1.3 Develop and refine a range of questions to frame search for new understanding.

1st Grade:
CC.1.R.I.6 Craft and Structure: Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.

AASL 1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g., textual, visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning.

2nd Grade:
CC.2.R.I.8 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.

AASL 2.1.3 Use strategies to draw conclusions from information and apply knowledge to curricular areas, real world situations, and further investigations
